Exploiting the biocontrol potential of plant-associated pseudomonads – A step towards pesticide-free agriculture?

•Pseudomonads occur in high persistence and abundance on and in crop plants.•The seeds play an important role in the colonization of plants with microorganisms.•A natural biocontrol of pathogens by indigenous pseudomonads seems unlikely.•Selected strains can be used for an augmentative biological control.•Their application on field scale is recommended as introduction via seeds.
