•Heavier particles started to leave the drum sooner but also left the drum at the latest.•Biomass interaction with rotating walls and flights had a significant influence on the biomass RTD.•Less-spherical particles had larger drag coefficients, although they left the drum later than spherical particles.•Less-spherical particles spent more time on the flights.
