Mechanisms of gas and shrinkage porosity formation in solidifying shear bands

•High strain rate injection experiments using a novel die-piston system were performed.•Full-field strain maps were quantified by digital image correlation.•Three distinct strain regions namely, Dilation, Compaction and Intermediate regions, were defined.•An empirical relation for porosity percentage against the integrated volumetric change is proposed.
