•Synthesis of α-Fe-Cr2O3 nanocomposites by high energy ball milling method.•Introduction of magnetism in ME-AFM Cr2O3 by mechanically milling it with FM α-Fe.•Hyperfine study shows the formation of α-Fe undergoing superparamagnetic relaxation.•Observation of exchange bias effect with enhanced coercivity at low temperature.•Existence of remanent magnetization above room temperature.
