Raman approach to the forensic study of bronze patinas

•Two ‘Etruscan-Roman’ like bronze statuettes of doubtful authenticity are analysed.•Patinas are investigated to distinguish original from fake artefacts.•A non-destructive, multi-techniques approach demonstrates a recent manufacture.•The synergy of archaeology and scientific methodologies has been successful.
