Prospective carbon balance of the wood sector in a tropical forest territory using a temporally-explicit model

•Temporally-explicit large scale carbon balance model guides wood sector strategies.•RIL allows increasing logging intensity (x 1.5) without additional carbon emissions.•Plantation reduces pressure on forests without effect on long- term carbon balance.•Converting forest to timber plantation leads to a short-term carbon emission peak.•Adding plantations improves timber carbon balance compared to selective logging only.
