摘要
•Investigation sheds light on the fundamental mechanisms of boiling in extremely confined gaps.•Small residual pockets of vapor, termed ‘stem bubbles’ herein, remain on the boiling surface.•Stem bubbles suppress nucleation and reduce surface superheat compared to nucleate boiling.•A confinement gap spacing threshold is proposed to identify the stem bubble boiling regime.
