Perceptions of conflict: Parochial cooperation and outgroup spite revisited

•We examine parochial cooperation (PC) and outgroup spite (OGS) in intergroup conflict.•We manipulate the perceived level—individual or group—of conflict.•PC is the main factor when conflict is perceived at the individual level.•OGS is equally strong when conflict is perceived at the group level.•OGS linked to acute and chronic prosociality when conflict perceived at group level.
