•Armchair NRs are semiconducting, while zigzag NRs are metallic, 5-ZCrS2NR.•5-ZCrS2NR shows characteristics of Huesler alloy.•ZMX2NRs (↑) are good reflector upto plasmon frequency, lying in the extreme UV region.
