Efficient computation of arbitrary beam scattering on a sphere: Comments and rebuttal, with a review on the angular spectrum decomposition

•A review on the use of the angular spectrum decomposition (ASD) in light scattering is presented.•This review is motivated by a recent paper presenting the use of the ASD in the context of a brute force approach.•Efficiency and accuracy of the brute force approach are discussed in comparison with the classical use of the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory.
