•MoOx/ZIF-8@ZIF-67 featured efficient activity and recyclability on lignin liquefaction.•Incorporation of MoOx resulted in the synergy between redox sites and acid sites.•Coupled hydrodeoxygenation and alkylation reaction were promoted.•Maximally 65 wt% of monomers and dimers were achieved after 12 h.
