Core-shell structured nets for biofouling control in aquaculture

•Core-shell structured nets (CleaNet) were fabricated by impregnation of nylon nets with PDMS/hexane solution.•PDMS shell introduces a hydrophobic surface and fouling-release properties to aquaculture nets.•Penetration of PDMS into the net core material enables mechanical interlocking, providing long-term mechanical stability.•The long-term stability of the CleaNet was confirmed during the one-year field test in the Baltic Sea.•Soft and hard fouling could be easily removed from the CleaNet surface.
