Anisotropic wetting surfaces machined by diamond tool with tips microstructured by focused ion beam

•A new fabrication method to precisely machine microfeatures on non-conductive single crystal diamond machine tools developed.•Such microstructured tools can produce precise and repeatable patterns on variety of materials including plastic and metal by CNC machining.•These micropatterns can be used to generate anisotropic wetting characteristics on a wide variety of surfaces.•This process is high throughput and low cost as compared with other processes for texturing surfaces to produce anisotropic wetting.
