•Azomethine bridges quenched the fluorescence of the polyazomethine.•Azomethine linkers caused a total loss of the charge transport.•Protonating the polyazomethine with trifluoricacetica cid turns-on its fluorescence.•Exposing the polyazomethine thin film to TFA activated the charge transport.
