Stability And Compatibility In The Receptivity Of Us Arts And Culture Organizations To Corporate Support

In the United States, corporate support is increasingly appealing to nonprofit organizations, particularly arts and culture organizations, as other sources of funding dwindle. However, in managing partnerships with corporations, arts and culture organizations must weigh risk to their reputation against the support offered by corporate partners. Drawing on a panel of nonprofit arts and culture organizations in the United States from 2004 to 2016, the authors find that organizational stability through government partnerships, financial health and organizational experience leads these organizations to be less receptive to corporate support, because they do not want to destabilize their reputation. On the other hand, increased marketing emphasis within arts and culture organizations creates compatibility with corporate partners, which reduces the perception of risk associated with corporate support and leads them to accept such support.
