•Synthesis of novel tetranuclear heterometallic Ni-Cd complex [{Ni2(κ2-SeC5H4N)2(µ-OCH3)CdCl}2].•Preparation of NiSe/CdSe heterostructure probably due to similar Ni-Se and Cd-Se in complex [{Ni2(κ2-SeC5H4N)2(µ-OCH3)CdCl}2].•Band gap of NiSe/CdSe heterostructure was found to be 1.95eV.
