•[BMIM]/[TOMP] ionic liquids (ILs) based on metal-EDTA complexes were synthetized.•The thermal behaviour of metal-EDTA ILs was investigated through TGA and DSC.•The solubility of metal-EDTA ILs in several solvents was tested.•Metal-EDTA ILs redox properties were assessed in aqueous/organic environments.
