•Washing and ensiling reduced the nutritional value of seaweed products.•Washing or ensiling alone did not make seaweed suitable for inclusion in broiler diets.•Seaweed extraction processes reduced the nutritional value of seaweed products.•Seaweed products included in broiler diets interacted with the basal diet.•Consequences for bird performance and health should be considered.
