Use-wear and residue analysis of pounding tools used by wild capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) from Serra da Capivara (Piauí, Brazil)

•We present the most comprehensive use wear analysis undertaken on primate stone tools to date.•We present the first integrated study of extant wild capuchin pounding tools.•Percussive tools bear different use-wear patterns based on the activity performed.•Micro-remains analysis show the identification of starch grains and other NPPs.•Capuchins select stones based on target and adjust their use based on the activity.
