Within the roots of Pleurothallidinae (Orchidaceae): An evolutionary analysis

•Root anatomy of 55 species and 10 genera of Pleurothallidinae is described.•Ancestral reconstruction analysis was performed with these characters.•Descriptions provided for the putative ancestors of the main clades of the group.•Structural analyses are important to understand the history of the group.
