•BiVO4 photo-catalyst was prepared by solvo-thermal technique.•Adjusting wettability is an effective means to improve photo-catalytic performance.•BiVO4 modified by APTES significantly improves the degradation efficiency of EE2.•The•O2− and h+ are the main reactive species for BiVO4 (0.70 APTES) to degrade EE2.
