•Green protic ionic liquids (GPILs) were prepared via acid-base reaction.•GPILs-microwave extraction exhibited high extraction ability for rosmarinic acid.•Acidity of GPILs and extraction temperature were the main extraction driving forces.•GPILs could be reused without decreasing their extraction ability.
