•High surface area (66.87 m2/g) SnO2/CeO2 NPs modified GCE (SnO2/CeO2/GCE).•SnO2/CeO2 plays a crucial role for the detection of Hydrazine.•Role of CeO2 dominates over SnO2 to be a sensitive detection of Hz.•Sensor with low detection limit (0.179 μM) and high sensitivity (81μAμM−1 cm−2).•Stable, good linear range, and repeatability.
