Study on active components of mulberry leaf for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular complications of diabetes

•Active components of mulberry leaf extract (MLE) were identified.•MLE improves cardiac function and glucose and lipid metabolism in diabetic mice.•1-Deoxynojirimycin is the main component responsible for myocardial protection.•MLE has potential as a myocardial protective drug for diabetes mellitus.
