Water use strategies of different aged moso bamboo culms under summer drought

•A summer flash drought was simulated by intercepting throughfall.•Established culms decreased water use and relied more on the nighttime sap flow.•Newly sprouted culms got water support from the rhizomes.•Drought-tolerance strategy might lead to the death of newly sprouted culms.
