Management practices and productivity in Japan: Evidence from six industries in JP MOPS

•Japanese Management and Organizational Practices Survey data are combined with Japanese Economic Census data for empirical analyses.•There is substantial variation in management scores across establishments.•Management scores are high when establishments recognize their competitors.•Management scores are positively associated with labor productivity.•Labor shares decline with management scores.
