•Eco-friendly pyrohydrolysis method was proposed for W determination in SiC.•First time that pyrohydrolyis was used for W determination.•Pyrohydrolysis method provided digests with minimum residual acidity and low total dissolved solids.•Proposed method was suitable for the quality control of SiC.
