Epidemiology

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an important cause of morbility and infertility. Is an infection of the upper genital tract in women, that usually results from ascending infection from the vagina and cervix, and can include endometritis, parametritis, salpingitis, tuboovarian abscess, perihepatitis and peritonitis. Is a common and serious complication of some sexually transmitted diseases, especially Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, being young age as one of the most important risk factors. The incidence of chlamydia anb gonorrhoea are increasing and therefore becomig a more common cause of PID. Long-term sequelae include chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
