摘要
This paper brings forth the efforts made by investigators in the field of IC engines aimed to improve its fuel efficiency and reduce its emissions. It is observed that various techniques are in the process of research so as to reduce friction at the moving interfaces in IC engines for addressing the concerns. Recently, certain surface textures (patterning nano/micro/macro geometries on the surfaces) have been identified as a viable technology for reducing friction at the interfaces of various tribo-contacts. Surface textures are also being employed at piston rings/cylinder liner interfaces to investigate the reduction in friction and wear, and accordingly, develop the possibilities of fuel-saving and emission reductions in IC engines. Several numerical and experimental studies indenting to improve IC engines' performance using surface textures are available in the open literature. Therefore, this paper aims to compile the available information on the tribo-performances of the piston ring/cylinder liner contacts as well as fuel-saving and emission reductions of the IC engines employing the surface textures at one place for ready reference to readers.
