Towards ontology-based network model management and data integration for smart grids

The IEC Common Information Model (CIM) is a well-established data model of the electric power domain and a valuable tool in addressing the informational complexity of the future power grid. In this work we derive a full-fledged RDFS ontology from the CIM UML model and establish a connection between CIM-based instance data and semantic graphs. Furthermore, we extend CIM with additional semantics to facilitate the integration of associated external data, such as repositories of measurement time series. Based on this, we design the core of an ontology-based data management system that allows to exploit CIM semantics to retrieve power grid information via an expressive queiy interface. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system in an information retrieval scenario over CIM-based network model data.
