•A predictive model is proposed to simulate the inkjet based 3D printing process.•The model is validated using confocal Raman microscopy and shows predictability.•A design framework is developed and used to determine and optimise quality.•Optimised printing strategies' performance and cost-effectiveness are evaluated.
