•We conducted a social relation model examination of need supportiveness.•There was assimilation of perceptions and consensus among people.•There was no dyadic or generalized reciprocity in perceptions of need supportiveness.•Need supportiveness may be partially a personality characteristic.•Results provide convergent validity for self-reported need supportiveness.
