•Plasma electrical oxidation is first reported for the cold sprayed CNT-Al coating.•The CNT can reduce the breakdown voltage to make the PEO ceramic coating thicker.•The PEO-CNT coating exhibits high hardness and elastic modulus.•The PEO-CNT coating shows excellent wear resistance and antifriction.
