The passive oxide coating on the surface of AISI 316 stainless steel protects from aggressive corrosion environment in the electric power station. However, in the particular situation, the low strength of AISI 316 stainless steel deforms to failure under chemical reaction, applied stress and temperature distribution. Therefore, the lifespan of AISI 316 stainless steel requires reliable and safety guarantee. It is suggested that alloying elements, corrosion resistance under deformation, high temperature treatment, radiation effect and chemical reaction are the dominant factors influencing the safety of AISI 316 stainless steel. Furthermore, M23C6 carbides and Y-Ti-O nanoparticles around granular boundaries, self-oxide porous distribution, Cr2O72- under chemical reaction, austenite to martensite deformation lead to creep happens. In conclusion, purification ultrafine AISI 316 stainless steel is the only method to upgrade lifetime.
