The current scope and contents of the development of VDI Guidelines for the monitoring of the ecological effects of genetically modified organisms are described. The general relevance of stanclardised VDI Guidelines for a GMO monitoring is explained. In particular, the state of the work of monitoring guidelines for butterflies (Lepidoptera) is described with a focus on the suitability of Lepicloptera as environmental indicators, the objectives and operative range of the Guideline, and the anticipated crucial points of the Guideline.
