Natural Variations In Maize Kernel Size: A Resource For Discovering Biological Mechanisms

Abstract This chapter reviews current knowledge about a variety of developmental, molecular, and genetic factors involved in maize kernel size determination. Information covered includes: (i) background and practical considerations of kernel size in maize production and utilization; (ii) kernel development and its relation to the inherent establishment of kernel size; (iii) maternal effects; (iv) phytohormone regulation; and (v) genes/quantitative trait loci controlling kernel size. Finally, the chapter reviews future prospects for research on kernel size, and opportunities these studies could provide to enhance grain yield.
