The emerging classes of organic and hybrid photodetectors have advantages over their inorganic counterparts when it comes to mechanical flexibility, light-weight, low costs, and scalability. Moreover, they offer the potential to be transparent outside the spectral range where photodetection is desired. This review provides an overview of emerging photoactive materials as well as applicable basic device architectures. Relevant photodetector characteristics are introduced and compared among the novel optical sensors. Furthermore, a general overview of applications is given. A performance comparison to conventional inorganic devices allows to predict potential novel application areas for organic and hybrid sensors.
