The Intelligent Coffee Corner: An Innovation Experimentation Space

This paper emphasises the involvement of users in the design and evaluation of context-sensitive applications. In keeping with an ideal user-centered design process, innovative context-aware applications that are under development are tested in an experimentation space: an intelligent Coffee Corner. The intelligent Coffee Corner originated as an experimentation environment in the Freehand Experience Lab, one the first wave Living Labs as defined by the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL). It finds success if people and technology continually interact. To stimulate these iterative design and evaluation process a variety of methods and tools to foster users' engagement are applied. Our vision and design experiences are described and reflected upon.
