The Magic Hand Of Speed: A Historical Account

This chapter examines the role of speed in machine/material processes from three points of view, namely economics, engineering, and management. It is shown that while not referred to explicitly in early political economy, it does appear in other forms such as motion and movement. Only in the early twentieth century do we find direct references to machine speed as a key factor in productivity growth.
