Although limited to a band extending less than 20 km beyond the coastline, Sentinel footprints cover most of the World coastal waters and can provide Mariners with valuable information when sailing in poorly charted shallow areas.The satellite inroad into the domain of safety of navigation reserved exclusively to classical surveys and Marine cartography is followed with great interest by the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) who starts to consider satellites as a possible alternative to fill the world uncharted gaps, alongside field-proven but expensive sensors such as lidar or echosounders.
