This article will discuss the recent history of vitiviniculture in the State of Santa Catarina - Brazil, discussing the territories that produce so - called "Altitude Wines". We will show that vitiviniculture can no longer be perceived as a small-farmer business, as it is often represented idyllically. Currently, wine production is seen as an important commodity, where winning prizes in national and international competitions can open markets to national and international consumers. The establishment of wineries with high quality standards, aiming at the highest social strata, has grown in recent years.
