•Enhancing parent-child communication is an important outcome in pediatric nursing.•Few well-documented parent-child communication measures exists.•The Parent-Child Communication Scale (PCCS) is one such measure.•We confirmed the factor structure of the PCCS.•And established convergent validity against a measure of parent-child relationship.
