•Essential implementation quality variables were not reported in many trials.•Details regarding monitoring and support systems for SLPs were lacking.•Support systems for parents and treatment dosage were generally well reported.•Publication year and study design did not relate to implementation quality.•Findings were used to develop a checklist for reporting stuttering trials.
