Association between residential greenness and overweight/obesity among rural adults in northwestern China

•The first study to explore the effects of greenness on obesity in Uyghur adults.•Higher greenness exposures were associated with lower BMI and WC levels.•Higher greenness was associated with lower peripheral overweight/obesity prevalence.•The associations were stronger in older participants.•Neither air pollutants nor physical activity mediated the associations.
