•HIV-positive women had both self- and clinician-collected HPV samples taken for HPV testing to conduct a comparative analysis on agreement.•Self-collected sampling had good agreement with clinician-collected, with similar HPV prevalence.•Zimbabwe's ministry of health and child care has recommended self-collection of HPV samples for cervical screening.
