Field and numerical investigation on roof failure and fracture control of thick coal seam roadway

•Three severely damaged areas under inefficient support revealed.•Stress field and coal roof thickness significantly affected the distribution of damaged areas.•The critical failure height varied with the thickness of coal roof.•Thick anchorage structure with high-stiffness surface reinforcement are suitable for thick-coal-roof roadway support.
