•Intramolecular hydrogen bond is weakened as the solvent polarity increased.•Intramolecular charge transfer has triggered ESIPT reaction of 3HF-OH.•ESIPT process of 3HF-OH is inclined to proceed in the weak-polar solvent.•Molecular configuration torsion of 3HF-OH inhibits the ESIPT behavior.
