摘要
•Periaqueductal gray (PAG) morphine has no analgesic effects against neuropathic pain.•PAG morphine increases spinal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), and a 5-HT3 agonist increases spinal γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA).•Morphine activates GABAergic interneurons in the spinal dorsal horn.•The function of inhibitory GABA receptors is altered after nerve injury.•GABA receptors contribute to the reduced efficacy of morphine for neuropathic pain.
