•Children with HIE are more likely to develop MND and motor skills deficits.•Motor and cognitive difficulties correlate with inattention measures in this population.•24-month neurological examination may predict MND at school-age.•24 months assessment of motor development did not predict motor function at school age.•In the absence of CP, neonatal conventional structural MRI is not predictive of school-age neuromotor outcomes.
