Coverage Standards as a Mature Interoperability-Enabling Implementation Platform.

Coverages represent a unifying concept for space/time Big Data which is mature, conceptually elaborate, and practically proven. Recently, coverage services have gained high interest, driven by the fact that getting insights through analytics is only feasible through advanced server-side analytics. The need for data fusion adds further challenges. Not surprisingly, considerable efforts have been invested by various standardization bodies to establish concise, interoperable specifications. In this contribution we inspect and relate coverage standards in OGC, ISO, and INSPIRE, thereby providing “in a nutshell” the core concepts, standards, and trends in the field of coverages.
